Tofo Beach is Africa's best-kept secret — a pristine stretch of Indian Ocean coastline where whale sharks cruise the surface, manta rays glide through the blue, and the sun shines 300 days a year on beaches that feel entirely undiscovered.
Africa's Most Extraordinary Beach
Tofo Beach sits on the Inhambane coast of southern Mozambique, 470km north of Maputo. It is not easy to reach. There are no direct flights from Europe, the roads are unpaved for the last 20km, and the infrastructure is basic. But what awaits at the end of that journey is one of the most extraordinary beach and diving destinations on earth.
The Indian Ocean here is warm (24–28°C year-round), clear (visibility 20–30m), and teeming with megafauna that has disappeared from most of the world's oceans. Whale sharks — the largest fish on earth — are resident year-round. Manta rays congregate in cleaning stations just 5 minutes from the beach. Humpback whales pass through from June to November. And the beaches themselves — white sand, palm trees, turquoise water — are as beautiful as anything in the Maldives, with a fraction of the visitors.

Tofo is one of the few places on earth where you can reliably dive with whale sharks, manta rays, and humpback whales in the same week. The combination of warm water, rich nutrients upwelling from the Mozambique Channel, and a protected marine environment has created a concentration of large marine life that is unmatched anywhere in the Indian Ocean.
Whale sharks: Present year-round, with peak sightings from October to March. Tofo has the highest density of whale sharks in the world outside the Galapagos. Snorkelling with whale sharks is permitted (diving is not — they're too fast). Cost: €60–80 for a 3-hour whale shark snorkel trip.
Manta rays: Resident year-round at cleaning stations 5–10 minutes from the beach. Two species — reef mantas (3–4m wingspan) and oceanic mantas (up to 7m wingspan). The cleaning station at Manta Reef is one of the most reliable manta dive sites in the world.
Humpback whales: June to November. Whale watching boat trips from €50/person. Snorkelling with humpbacks is occasionally possible — one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences on earth.
Best dive sites:
Dive centres: Diversity Scuba, Peri-Peri Divers, Tofo Scuba. Single dive from €35, PADI Open Water €350.
The Beaches: Pure, Unspoiled Beauty
Tofo Beach is 3km of white sand backed by palm trees and low dunes. There are no high-rise hotels, no jet skis, no beach vendors every 10 metres. The beach is almost entirely undeveloped — a few beach bars, a handful of guesthouses, and the sound of the Indian Ocean.
Tofo Beach — the main beach. Gentle waves in the morning, stronger surf in the afternoon. Swimming is safe in the morning. The beach bar at Fatima's Nest serves cold Laurentina beer (€2) and fresh peri-peri prawns (€8).
Tofinho — the headland south of Tofo. A surf break (right-hander, intermediate to advanced) and a rocky point with excellent snorkelling. The sunset from Tofinho is one of the best in Africa.
Barra Beach — 15km north, a long, deserted beach with a lighthouse. No facilities, extraordinary beauty. Drive or take a local chapa (minibus) for Rp 20 (€1).

Insider Tips
1. Book whale shark trips for early morning — the best sightings are before 9am when the water is calmest and the sharks are feeding near the surface.
2. Bring cash — Tofo has no ATMs. Bring enough Mozambican meticais (or US dollars, widely accepted) for your entire stay.
3. Peri-peri prawns are the dish — Mozambique's giant tiger prawns, grilled with peri-peri sauce, are among the best things you'll eat in Africa. Order them everywhere.
4. The surf at Tofinho is best at low tide in the morning. Ask at any dive centre for the tide times.
5. Travel insurance with medical evacuation is essential — the nearest hospital with surgical capability is in Maputo, 470km away.
