A week on safari in the Serengeti followed by a week on Zanzibar's white sand beaches — this is Africa's greatest travel combination. Here's how to plan it perfectly.
There is a moment, somewhere over the Serengeti, when the scale of Africa becomes real. The savanna stretches to every horizon, broken only by acacia trees and the distant silhouette of Kilimanjaro. Below, a river of wildebeest moves in a column so vast it takes an hour to pass. This is Tanzania — and it is, by almost any measure, the greatest wildlife destination on earth.
Pair it with a week on Zanzibar's white-sand beaches, and you have Africa's most compelling travel combination: the raw drama of the bush followed by the languid luxury of the Indian Ocean. Here is how to plan it perfectly.

Tanzania holds an extraordinary concentration of Africa's greatest natural wonders. The Serengeti — 30,000 square kilometres of open savanna — hosts the Great Migration, the largest overland animal movement on earth. The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcanic caldera sheltering the densest concentration of wildlife in Africa. Kilimanjaro, at 5,895 metres, is the continent's highest peak and one of the world's most accessible high-altitude climbs. And Zanzibar, 35 kilometres off the coast, offers some of the Indian Ocean's finest beaches and a UNESCO-listed Stone Town of extraordinary historical depth.
No other single country in Africa offers this breadth of experience.
The Great Migration: Timing Your Safari
The Great Migration is the defining reason to visit Tanzania — but timing matters enormously. The wildebeest follow the rains in a roughly circular route across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem, and the experience varies dramatically by season.
|---|---|---|
Calving season (January–February) in the southern Serengeti around Ndutu is one of the most extraordinary wildlife events on earth. Half a million wildebeest calves are born in a three-week window, and the predators — lions, cheetahs, hyenas, wild dogs — converge in extraordinary numbers. The photography is exceptional.
River crossings (July–October) in the northern Serengeti are the most dramatic moments of the migration. Thousands of wildebeest gather on the bank of the Mara River, working up the courage to cross, while Nile crocodiles up to five metres long wait below. The crossings are unpredictable — you might wait all morning and see nothing, or witness three crossings in a single afternoon.
The Best Safari Camps
Tanzania's luxury safari camps are among the finest in Africa — intimate, beautifully designed, and positioned for exceptional game viewing.
Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti (from €1,200/night) is the most accessible luxury option — a permanent lodge with a pool, spa, and exceptional service. The position in the central Serengeti is excellent year-round.
Singita Grumeti (from €2,500/night) is one of the finest safari experiences in Africa. The private Grumeti Reserve borders the western Serengeti, offering exclusive game viewing with no other vehicles. The lodges — Sabora Tented Camp, Faru Faru River Lodge, and Sasakwa Lodge — are extraordinary. The price includes all meals, drinks, and game drives.
Nomad Tanzania (from €600/night) offers exceptional value without compromising on the safari experience. Their mobile camps move with the migration, ensuring you are always in the right place at the right time. Serengeti Safari Camp and Lamai Serengeti are both excellent.
&Beyond Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (from €1,800/night) is one of Africa's most iconic properties — a series of individual suites perched on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, with views across the caldera that are genuinely breathtaking. The crater itself, accessible by 4WD, shelters 25,000 animals including the densest population of lions in Africa.
The Zanzibar Combination
After the intensity of the bush, Zanzibar offers the perfect counterpoint: white sand, turquoise water, and the kind of languid luxury that makes a week feel like a month.
Stone Town — Zanzibar's UNESCO-listed capital — is a labyrinth of narrow streets, carved wooden doors, and Arab-Swahili architecture that reflects the island's history as the centre of the Indian Ocean spice and slave trade. Allow a full day to explore: the Old Fort, the Palace Museum, the spice market, and the rooftop restaurants overlooking the harbour at sunset.
Nungwi, at the island's northern tip, has the best beaches — wide, white, and sheltered from the tides that affect the east coast. The snorkelling on the house reef is excellent, and the sunsets over the Indian Ocean are extraordinary.
Matemwe, on the northeast coast, is the best base for diving. The Mnemba Atoll — a private island surrounded by one of the finest coral reefs in the Indian Ocean — is accessible by boat and offers exceptional diving and snorkelling with turtles, dolphins, and reef fish in extraordinary abundance.
Best Hotels in Zanzibar
The Residence Zanzibar (from €450/night) is the finest resort on the island — a collection of private villas on the southwest coast, each with a private pool and direct beach access. The spa, restaurants, and service are exceptional.
Zuri Zanzibar (from €350/night) on the northwest coast offers a more intimate experience — 40 villas in a coconut grove, excellent food, and a beautiful beach. The snorkelling directly off the beach is among the best on the island.

Getting There
KLM flies Amsterdam–Kilimanjaro (via Nairobi) and Amsterdam–Dar es Salaam (via Nairobi or Amsterdam direct). Ethiopian Airlines offers excellent connections via Addis Ababa to both Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar. Most safari operators arrange internal charter flights between the Serengeti airstrips and Zanzibar — typically 1.5–2 hours.
Visa: Tanzania requires an e-visa (€50) available online before travel. The same visa covers Zanzibar.
Insider Tips
Book 6–12 months ahead for the best camps during peak migration season (July–October). The finest properties — Singita, &Beyond — sell out a year in advance.
Combine north and south Serengeti if your budget allows. Fly between the two to follow the migration rather than staying in one location.
Zanzibar east coast tides are extreme — at low tide, the sea retreats hundreds of metres. The north and west coasts (Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe) are sheltered and swimmable at all tides.
Malaria precautions are essential for both Tanzania and Zanzibar. Consult your doctor about prophylaxis at least 4 weeks before travel.
